Devontae W. Torriente is a civil rights lawyer and writer based in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He currently works at the National Police Accountability Project (NPAP) where he litigates law enforcement and correctional misconduct cases in federal courts across the United States. After his time at NPAP, Devontae will serve as a judicial law clerk for the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania.
In addition to civil rights litigation, Devontae has a background in policy advocacy, politics, communications, community organizing, and social movements more broadly. Before law school, he worked in various roles in Washington, D.C., including at Community Change, a national nonprofit focused on enacting policy changes and supporting on-the-ground organizing for housing, racial, economic, and immigration justice. He also worked at Priorities USA, a key Democratic Party political action committee, where he coordinated nearly $200 million in paid media with dozens of partner organizations focused on winning the 2020 presidential election. At Priorities, Devontae coordinated paid media programs focused on Black voters and climate issues across battleground states and was part of the effort that helped elect Joe Biden and Kamala Harris as president and vice president of the United States. Devontae is also a co-founder of and advisor for Blue Future, a youth-led civic engagement organization focused on training young people to get involved with progressive political campaigns.
Originally from a working-class family in New York City, Devontae is a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania Law School where he received the full-tuition Toll Public Interest Scholarship for his academic and professional achievements. He spent his time in law school working on behalf of various social causes and organizations, including NPAP and the Constitutional Accountability Center. Devontae graduated from American University in Washington, D.C., with his bachelor’s degree, cum laude, in Justice & Law and a minor in African American & African Diaspora Studies. At American University, Devontae served as the first Black president of the student government and spent my summers working at the Human Rights Campaign and Center for American Progress. Devontae's work on various social, legal, and political issues has been featured in The Atlantic, The Appeal, The Philadelphia Inquirer, Salon, the University of Pennsylvania Law Review Online, and more.
